Old Stone Well Farm

Have you ever heard of a witch window? I just discovered this Vermont architectural anomaly and the fun folklore behind it. (You can click on the image below and fast forward to the video to the 4:44 mark to get a preview of it)!

But such a window got me thinking about the things we do to “protect” ourselves from harm. The world we live in seems so unsafe at times, but there is what I call an ancient security system that we have forgotten about and it involves God.

In this season of harvest, as our Jewish friends just finished their celebration of Sukkot (or Festival of Booths), I turn to the Hebrew Scriptures — the Psalms and the Book of Deuteronomy — to remember the promises of God to not only provide for us manna from heaven and water from a rock, but to protect our loved ones — to send “an angel of the Lord to encamp” around us.

Drop me a note and let me know your thoughts! What do you think of the witch window? And what can you do in your household to remember always the goodness of God in this world that is so full of darkness and so broken?

  1. Witch, which window, let the light in! It is a place to view the heart, a place to start to know the LORD. Good reminder of God being with us all as we go out and come in! Wondered if it was your rail trail with the news of the shooting. Praying for peace – the end of hostility and then to be the peace of Christ for all.

  2. I have not heard of the “witch window” and find it an interesting bit of folklore. I struggle with God’s protection of those who are oppressed, attacked, dismissed, discriminated against, bombed, hated, and terrorized. It seems God is not protecting them. We live in a hostile and scary world and it is hard sometimes to trust God’s promise of protection. My only answer for myself is to do what I can in my corner of the world to treat people with kindness and respect and trust in God’s goodness and mercy.
I read in the paper about the woman who was killed on the Rail Trail and knew that was the person you mentioned. I know that gives you pause about running on the Trail.
On a happier note, I am sure Vermont is bursting with color now and we are seeing the early signs of it here in North Carolina. Blessings to you and thank you for your ministry through your uplifting videos.

    • It is bursting with color here. But some winds whipped through and already many of the leaves are on the ground. In some places it looks more like late November. And, yes, the world has me so perplexed as it seems harder and harder to see goodness. Why do evil things happen to some? Why doesn’t God present this horrible violence we are seeing? It is a challenge to trust God’s protection. But as a friend reminded me the other day, we have been given free will to decide how we treat others, and some people for reasons we might not ever understand, choose evil. You are absolutely correct that all we can do is treat people in our corner of the world with kindness and respect. Now if more people did that, we would see more of God’s love. Blessings and hugs to you!!! Donna
